Hi all! I’ve got a friend who has a 2010 Kia Forte sedan with the 2.0L Theta II engine and an auto transmission. Right now, it’s throwing 9 different codes and running really poorly / stalling. Many of them are all O2 sensor related, but two (P0024 and P1401) are not.
P0024 is a Camshaft sensor-related code, and P1401 is some sort of EVAP System code. Any Hyundai/Kia techs on here or generally knowledgeable folks that might know the most likely culprits for both? He’s hoping it’s a cheap and relatively easy fix as the car only has 130,000kms (80,000 miles), otherwise he is considering selling it to possible get a new car.
130,000kms seems like a pretty low mileage (to me) to be getting rid of a car that has been generally pretty reliable for him and has no rust that I am aware of, so I am trying to convince him to fix it and keep it (especially as replacing the cam sensor completely is like $50 CAD for the part and one bolt/one connector to replace)....he could afford a new second car (he also has a 2016 Optima - the Forte is his wife’s car) if he HAD to, but if it’s a relatively easy fix I would feel bad with him wasting the money...
Thanks for any help and suggestions as to what the most likely reason for the two codes would be! :)

Do you know what all of the codes are?
And does he change his oil regularly (like every 5k miles) and use quality oil and filters?

Yes, he follows the regular Service intervals - all services done by the dealership.
Uh, let me go find what he sent me (have to re-type them as he sent all the codes as phone pics of a friend’s code reader’s screen he borrowed)
P1401
P2626
P2626 P
P2195
P2195 P
P0170 P
P0138 P
C0300
P0024

I’m sorry, but Kia codes are not my....Forte.

CCould be a harness issue if they all come out of the same ECM. Or the ECM?

What you did there...I see it.

Well, code C0300 indicates a possible harness failure, so...not sure.

I sounds like bad wiring or some really stupid sensor that is tied into everything. The Rough running and a metric shit tonne of codes is what leads me to believe it’s module related.

I’m thinking a wire shorting out somewhere maybe.

It’s sad because most people don’t even know the Kia Elan was even a thing!

Well, a quick search points to a bad O2 sensor: B1S2. And the computer is freaking the fuck out over it.
The P and C codes aren’t related, they’re just a shitty coincidence. The C code is for a speed sensor in the rear.
It’s not entirely uncommon for a cam sensor and an O2 sensor to go bad around this mileage, it just sucks to happen at the same time.
So my professional opinion without looking at is that he as a bad O2 sensor, a bad cam sensor, and a bad speed sensor.

The C and P codes are unrelated and if it were a wiring issue he’d have a shit of chassis and body codes. But all the P codes, except the cam sensor, is all related to a bad O2 sensor.

Well, the O2 sensor he could drive on for now. As for the speed sensor - is that the one that controls the speedo? Wouldn’t his speedo be freaking out of not working (it’s working fine AFAIK)?
The cam sensor seems easy enough to replace on that car...how hard is the speed sensor to do?

Wheel speed sensor doesn’t affect the Speedo at all, they just manage abs and traction control stuff, the sensor itself will be in the wheel hub and probably not difficult at all if it’s not rusty although I can’t speak for Kias specifically. Depending on where it connects to the main body harness though unplugging/plugging it in could be a pain.

I wish I lived closer to him - I would run to the local pick and pull yard and find a used cam sensor and see if it makes a difference at least.
